How the CIA helped JustLocal.

Hi Everyone,

In this edition of JustLocal News we welcome a number of new advertisers, share how the CIA has helped JustLocal and offer you a free copy of the previous release of the amazing OzEfilter program.

Recently a number of people have shared their JustLocal experiences with us and we thought we would share this feedback with you. By seeing how others are using JustLocal, you may see a way JustLocal can also help you.

  • One of the JustLocal advertisers thanked us for introducing them to Freshtel. They have disconnected their telephone and now use Freshtel and Voice Over Internet for all their telephone calls. They said they will easily save themselves over a thousand dollars a year and appreciated everything we had done for them.

  • One business soon to join JustLocal, was very impressed with how easy it was to order their business cards over the Internet using the advertiser they found on JustLocal. Their feedback is they were amazed at how easy the service was to use. We think they will be even more amazed with the very quick delivery of their business cards. We know one person ordered their business cards late Thursday night and received them  Monday morning.

  • We have had an ongoing problem for months to get a reliable network cabling tradesperson. We sent an email to Barbara the president of MCEI (a new JustLocal advertiser) and almost immediately we received leads which lead to the cabling work being completed within two weeks. This really shows it is not what you know, but who you know.

Everyone who uses JustLocal finds something of value.

It may be great value or great service from a JustLocal advertiser.

It may be our list of Free Software which can save hundreds of dollars, or it may be the Australian English dictionary files helping to make your work communications more professional.

No matter what it is, we are glad we can help.

If you have a story to share on how JustLocal has helped you, we would love to hear from you.

Is your approach to handling spam costing you business?

Here are a few examples of businesses which could be losing money because of their spam filtering software.

  • We sent an order to one of our suppliers via email. We called to find out why they hadn't confirmed. The email had gone into the spam folder without their knowledge. The business could have easily missed out on the order, or could have been seen as an unresponsive supplier, all because of their email client.

  • We met a solicitor from a Box Hill legal firm. We sent them an email to find out more information. Our email was rejected because it contained an image. Would you deal with a business you can't send emails to?

  • We sent a lead advice for fencing work to a person who uses Hotmail. Hotmail from our experience often puts emails into spam. Did the person receive the email? Does the person not follow up? We don't know. But what we do know is we only pass on work if we know it will be acted upon.

All of these examples share our experiences where a business could or will lose a thousand dollars or more of business, because some computer person somewhere, made a decision on their behalf.

Many people have let us know they are not happy with the automatic decisions their spam filtering software makes and we totally agree.

Are you receiving ALL your emails?

OzEfilter takes a completely different approach to handling spam.

An approach that came from the idea to have our telephone ring with one tone when someone we know was calling, and a different tone for people we didn't know, such as those annoying telemarketing calls.

OzEfilter works for us having deleted over 25,000 unwanted emails before they reached our computer. Unwanted emails, many which would have contained potentially dangerous and costly content.

We believe OzEfilter will work for you, but what better way to find out than to try out the software.

So you can road test OzEfilter, we are giving away a FREE copy of OzEfilter 1.5 (the previous edition) to anyone on the JustLocal mailing list who would like a copy.

This is the previous full version of OzEfilter which expires at the end of June 2007. This will give you plenty of time to road test OzEfilter.

You can find out more information on OzEfitler by clicking on the Beat Spam image on the www.JustLocal.com.au page.

If you are interested in road testing OzEfilter, send me an email requesting your free copy of OzEfilter 1.5. Remember, you must be on our mailing list to receive a copy.

How the CIA helped JustLocal

Yes, the CIA really has helped JustLocal.

When reviewing the JustLocal server logs we often check the country of the person who accessed the JustLocal site. This has helped us a number of times identify bona fide from non bona fide requests.

The information in the logs which we use to determine the country, is known as the IP address. It is a number which looks like the following 84.221.222.89.

If you enter the following address in your browser you can find the country associated with the IP address.

http://www.justlocal.com.au/clients/ip2country/country.php?address=84.221.222.89

If you change the IP address at the end to an IP address you wish to check, you can determine the country for that IP address.

So how did the CIA help us. The flags of the world are provided by the CIA from a CIA site and are made available for free under the public domain licence.

Now you really had to know that information didn't you;-)

For those interested in using this facility regularly, you can easily set up a search engine in Internet Explorer 7. Then all you need to do is copy and paste the number into the search field and select the search engine. If you would like to know how to do this, send us an email and we will send you the instructions.

We have also gone one step further. We have written a short program which allows us to highlight an IP address in Internet Explorer, right click and select GetCountry, which saves the copy and paste step. We are happy to make the program available free to JustLocal advertisers.
