Giveadollarday is back The first giveadollarday was the day JustLocal went live. We have decided to make giveadollarday a six monthly event. Thus giveadollarday will fall on the 14th of February and the 14th of August each year. The remainder of this page is from the original giveadollarday page. We have kept the original content as a reminder to us that giving is how JustLocal came about. What is giveadollarday? The day itself is the 14th of February 2006. Most people know this day as Valentine's day. But did you know it is exactly forty years since the introduction of decimal currency. What better way to celebrate this day than to give $1 to a charity, an organisation, or someone in need. Yes just $1. No more, no less. No-one determines who you give it to except yourself. The first charitable opportunity you see for the day, you simply give away $1. It could be a collection can at the supermarket, or at a fast food place. It could be a collection at your work. It could be your school. It could be someone in need. Who you give it to is up to you. Your reward is the simple satisfaction of making a difference. It may seem insignificant, but if everyone in Australia gave away $1, that would add up to be millions of dollars. The total however does not matter. The day is a day to have fun. Enjoy your dollar, and enjoy what you do with it. Questions and Answers We decided before starting giveadollarday to do a little research and find out what people thought. Here are some of their questions Q. How do people find out about giveadollarday? A. We started promoting giveadollar day on February 9th with an email to everyone that was in our contact list. It didn't matter who they were. They all got an email. An email to participate in giveadollarday, and to forward the email to everyone of their contacts if they wished to participate. The hope was for the good intent will spread like a virus, but have nothing but goodwill as the message. (NOTE: When you send a message to a list of contacts, remember to put the list of contacts in the BCC field and put your own address in the To field. That way others don't see your contacts email addresses.) Q. How much do I give? A. $1. No more, no less. Simply $1. Q. Who does the money go to? A. Whomever you give it to. There is no single organisation to collect your money and no single organisation that will distribute your money. The money goes to whomever you donate it to. Q. You can't just name a day? A. Why not. Anyone can name a day if they want. Okay so maybe Valentine's day was not the best day to pick. But hey, I didn't introduce decimal currency. Q. Do you realise it is Valentines day? A. Absolutely. But it doesn't really matter. A single dollar. A small act of goodwill is unlikely to get in the way of a tradition like Valentine's day. Enjoy doing both. Q. Is there some way you will know what difference giveadollarday will make? A. You will know. That is all that counts. Q. Who is behind giveadollarday? A. No-one and everyone. The idea may have started with one person, but the credit has to go to everyone who participates. An idea without action is simply an idea. Q. Who should I send the email to? A. Only send the email to people you know. Q. Are there any tips I should know when sending an email to a list of contacts? A. Put you own email address in the To field. Put everyone else's email address in the BCC field. That way your contact's email address is not seen by others, and that is the friendly way to do it. Also if you forward the email, delete the previous senders contact information from the body of the email. Only include the information as though you had created the email yourself. Q. How did the idea for giveadollarday come about? A. I had just completed a project and was pleased. The project goes live on the 14th of February which is the 40th anniversary of the introduction of decimal currency. To celebrate I thought "what should I do". "I know" I thought. On February 14 I will give a single dollar to the first charity or person in need. That would please me and it is very simple. Then I thought I would like the rest of the family to join me in the same gesture for a bit of fun. Then as you can guess the idea exploded. What if everyone did the same thing on the same day. Now wouldn't that be something. Initially I dismissed the idea. But the idea of helping so many with such a small amount of effort was overwhelming. So the idea of giveadollarday was born.
No matter what happens on February the 14th, enjoy the day. Thank you, Kelvin Eldridge
