Fun with Search

Have you ever wanted to:

  • Know the latest weather.
  • Know how much your money is worth in another currency.
  • Know the meaning of a word.
  • Set Google to default to pages from Australia (or for our friends overseas, UK or NZ).

Now you can.

Using the search feature in Internet Explorer 7/8 located at the top right of the browser window, we'll show you how to do all the above and much more.

If you have a suggestion for a search engine visit my blog and add a comment. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Introduction

At the top right of Internet Explorer 7/8 is an area we'll call the search area. From our observations many people aren't even aware the search area exists, or what it can do, so they set their default page to Google.

When you receive a new computer the search field uses the default search provider, which is Microsoft's Live Search. Since most people use Google, the search field seems to be of little value. The good thing is the search provider can be easily changed.

Now if you really want to do something to help fellow Australians, then set your search provider to Google, Bing or Yahoo with the pages defaulting to Australia. That way you will get rid of all the clutter of sites from overseas, which makes it harder to see Australian sites.

The following links allow you to quickly change the default search provider for the countries Australia, United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand.

Now you have the search provider set up you can start having some fun. At this stage you are using Google as the search provider. Later we add a number of other search providers and you will see the search facility is incredibly powerful.

Google Search for Internet Explorer 8

Microsoft have removed the option for Google search from the additional search engines making if very difficult for users to reinstall the standard Google search if required. Users are presented with Bing. This search engine is based on the same code as originally used for Internet Explorer 8 and is designed for use in Australia.

The Weather

Want to know the latest weather?

I live in Melbourne Australia. To find out what the weather is going to be all I need to do is type "weather in Melbourne" into the search field and Google returns the latest weather. Pretty cool! Well perhaps hot depending on your weather forecast.

A billion dollar Calculator

In the search engine type in 3+4 and hit Enter and Google gives you the answer.

Want more. This page gives more information on what you can do with the calculator feature of Google.

Now this calculator has some quite handy features. Conversions from different weights and measures can be very useful. Dieters be warned. The calorie to kilojoule is out by a factor of a thousand. Google is pretty good, but it's not perfect.

Exchange rates

The recent drop in the Australian dollar relative to the US dollar has a lot of people rethinking overseas holidays, but there is some good news. Check the exchange rate for the country you are visiting. The Australian dollar has dropped, but so has the currency in other countries. The UK is looking like a better place to vacation than the US. The Euro is looking OK too. Thailand may have to wait for another year as their currency has held up well compared to the Australian dollar and it is nearly fifty percent dearer to go to Thailand at the moment.

To convert from Australian dollars you can write something like "100 Australian dollars in US dollars" and you will get the answer. Another way is to use the currency codes such as "100 AUD in USD". The following are currency codes I might use: Australia, AUD, United States, USD, Great Britain, GBP, Europe, EUR.

Other Search Providers

Whilst the built in features of Google are pretty neat, we can also create other search providers and this is where the power of search can be used to look up almost anything. In this section we introduce a number of search providers we have created.

JustLocal Search

JustLocal is an advertising service aimed at bringing like minded business people together. Most businesses are built on the logic of taking from customers. That to us drains the local community. If local businesses looked at their customers as potential suppliers we believe the local community would grow. JustLocal advertisers are business people that go the extra step. To give as well as receive. We believe this is the future of business.

If you need a product or service, try the JustLocal search engine. In this case we suggest adding JustLocal Search but not making it your default search engine. That way JustLocal search is there when you want it.

Default Google searches to your country first

Our sites statistics show a lot of people prefer to search pages from their own country first. This helps to promote local sites first. Many large international sites overwhelm smaller local sites. Searching for pages from your own country first.

Google Maps

Need to check out an address. Add the Google Maps search and all you need to do is enter the address and you go straight to the map. Much easier than trying to find the Google site which has their maps.

Check you're using the preferred Australian spelling

Word Check provides the ability to check if they are using the preferred Australian English spelling of a word. Suggestions are offered for incorrectly spelt words as well as the ability to quickly look up the meaning of a word.

Check the country of an IP address

For the technical amongst us checking the country of an IP address can be very handy. We often get people approaching us via our site pretending to be from one country when the address in our logs show us clearly they are from another country. This tool enables us to check an IP address in our logs, emails and from people placing orders. A great little tool.

ABN - Australian Business Number

I regularly look up the ABN of companies. I decided I'd make this easier using a search engine. There are two search engines. One to look up the details of the company using the ABN number and the other to enter the company name to find the ABN.

ABN - Australian Business Number (Look up by number)
ABN - Australian Business Number (Look up by name)

Love to use Yahoo! search

In days of past Yahoo offered a clean search engine without the clutter that we now see. Add either of these search engines and bypass the clutter of their main page. Until now the clutter put me off Yahoo!. This now means I can quickly check Yahoo search results which often differ from the results returned by Google giving me more choice.

Yahoo! Australia
Default Yahoo! to search pages from Australia

WolframAlpha

The WolframAlpha service is an interesting service to consider when you're lookings for answers to questions. For example I wanted to know the current Australian import and export figures so I could determine whether Australia is a net importer or exporter. Asking the questions "Australian imports" and "Australian explorts" gave me the answers I needed. In this case much better than hundreds of thousands of pages for me to open and check via other search engines. I've found it handy already. Another tool I can add to my bag of tricks.

JustLocal Australia

JustLocal Go

This search engine will go direct to site if common, otherwise perform a search of Google with the default to pages from Australia. (Testing)

Stay tuned

We have a few more search providers we're putting together. If you have an idea for a search facility, then please feel free to drop us a line.
