For those who need to spell check in the U.S.A.

A solution has been made available for some years by a person who goes by the mysterious name of Vampirefo.

We have included below (with permission) a link to a copy of the original spell check program.

What about those who need to spell check in Australia?

We recently contacted Vampirefo and he wrote a patch for his program to enable the program to spell check in Australian English.

Thanks Vampirefo for making the patch available.

A link to the patch is included below.

For those who need to spell check in the UK and Canada.

The patch supplied by Vampirefo was not specific to Australia. From what we can tell it changes the preferred spelling from the US standard to the standard suitable for other countries such as Australia, Canada, the UK.

For example the patch changes the preferred spelling from color to colour and organize to organise.

The patch is applied after the spell check program is installed. The patch should not be used by itself.

Programs

We are now making Vampirefo's programs available to JustLocal users.

In order to spell check in Australian English you need to first install the Spell Check program (spell.exe) and then run the patch (SCO patch.exe).

The program spell.exe adds the spell check program suitable for U.S. English to Outlook Express.

The additional program SCO patch.exe is a patch (SCO patch.exe) which enables the spell check program to check Australian English spelling. This patch does not work without the spell.exe program being installed first.

We have combined both programs into a single zip file since both are generally needed for Australian spelling. If you only need U.S. English spelling, only use the spell.exe program.

The following are the instructions to install the program and patch.

Right click on the following link
Select Save Target As and save the file to your Desktop

Outlook Express spell check.zip

(Please contribute to access this file.)

Right click on the downloaded zip file, select Properties, click on unblock.
Extract the files into a new folder. This can also be on your Desktop.
Run the spell.exe program. This will enable spell checking with spelling such as "color" which is the American spelling.
Run the SCO patch.exe program. The will change the spelling to check for spelling such as "colour" which is the Australian spelling.

To check that everything is working create a new email in Outlook Express and test the word combinations colour/color and organise/organize. The words colour and organise will appear as the correct spelling when the programs are installed.

Feedback

We have performed basic tests on these programs and would appreciate any feedback.

It should be noted that we are not in a position to change the programs in any way.

We hope you find value in the spell check programs.

Known issues and comments

  1. The spell check program spells using our preferred spelling. That is we prefer not to spell using the "ize" variations, but prefer to spell using the "ise" variations. That is "organise" and not "organize".

In Australia it is generally acceptable to spell quite a few thousand words in two ways. How each person spells is their own personal choice. We are simply sharing our preferred choice as we believe this removes confusion from the language and may assist others.

  2. In Australia as best we can tell, the words "judgement" and "judgment" is used fairly equally. In the UK the spelling "judgement" appears to have greater use.

Our preferred spelling is "judgement" and this is by coincidence is the same as used by the spell check program.

For legal use in Australia "judgment" appears to have much greater usage. You may wish to add "judgment" to your custom word list if you work in the legal area.

  3. Based on posts on the Internet many people have problems with the Outlook Express spell check not being enabled when it should be enabled, because they have Microsoft Office, Word, or Works installed. We do not suggest using the programs available on this page to get around this problem.

  4. If you wish to add additional words you can add them to the the custom.dic file using the Add option in the spell checker. The words in the custom.dic file however will not be offered as suggestions for an incorrectly spelt word.
