DICTIONARY NEWS

21 January 2009

Try out Australian English Word Check (alpha).

The Australian English Word Check allows you to check a word to see if it is the preferred spelling used in Australia. Word Check uses the word list for the next version of the Australian English spellcheck dictionary. The next release is still some months off and requires a great deal of work. In the meantime, Word Check will enable you to check words and find the meaning of the word.

You can find Word Check via this link, Australian English Word Check.

You can also add Word Check as a search engine to your browser using the links on the Word Check page. This effectively turns the search field of your browser into an Australian English dictionary.

Why use Word Check?

There are a large number of FREE dictionaries available on the Internet. The problem is they are all based overseas and this makes it difficult to determine if the spelling is for Australia. Word Check confirms you are using the preferred spelling of a word in Australia.

Remember, Word Check is currently in alpha, and requires many more words to be checked and added before it reaches general release stage. Your feedback and comments as always are welcome.

Introduction

If you have a computer with Windows XP, then you have Outlook Express available to use.

The problem is without specific Microsoft software installed, the spellcheck feature of Outlook Express does not work.

More recently people are finding when they install Office 2007 their spellchecker in Outlook Express stops working.

This page will help you if this is your problem.

For those who need to spellcheck in the USA.

A solution has been made available for some years by a person who goes by the mysterious name of Vampirefo.

We have included below (with permission) a link to a copy of the original spellcheck program.

What about those who need to spellcheck in Australia?

We contacted Vampirefo and he wrote a patch for his program to enable the program to better spellcheck in Australian English. For example "colour" instead of "color" and "organise" instead of "organize".

For those who need to spellcheck in the UK and Canada.

The patch supplied by Vampirefo is not specific to Australia. From what we can tell it changes the preferred spelling from the US standard to the standard suitable for other countries such as Australia, Canada, the UK.

The patch is applied after the spellcheck program is installed. The patch should not be used by itself.

Programs

We are now making Vampirefo's programs available to JustLocal users.

In order to spellcheck in Australian English you need to first install the SpellCheck program (spell.exe) and then run the patch (SCO patch.exe).

The program spell.exe adds the spellcheck program suitable for U.S. English to Outlook Express.

The additional program SCO patch.exe is a patch (SCO patch.exe) which enables the spellcheck program to check Australian English spelling. This patch does not work without the spell.exe program being installed first.

We have combined both programs into a single zip file since both are generally needed for Australian spelling. If you only need U.S. English spelling, only use the spell.exe program.

The following are the instructions to install the program and patch.

Right click on the following link
Select Save Target As and save the file to your Desktop

Outlook Express spellcheck.zip

Right click on the downloaded zip file, select Properties, click on unblock.
Extract the files into a new folder. This can also be on your Desktop.
Run the spell.exe program. This will enable spellchecking with spelling such as "color" which is the American spelling.
Run the SCO patch.exe program. This will change the spelling to check for spelling such as "colour", which is the Australian spelling.

To check that everything is working create a new email in Outlook Express and test the word combinations colour/color and organise/organize. The words colour and organise will appear as the correct spelling when the programs are installed.

Feedback

We have performed basic tests on these programs and would appreciate any feedback.

It should be noted that we are not in a position to change the programs in any way.

We hope you find value in the spellcheck programs.

Known issues and comments

  1. The spellcheck program spells using our preferred spelling. That is we prefer not to spell using the "ize" variations, but prefer to spell using the "ise" variations. That is "organise" and not "organize".

In Australia it is generally acceptable to spell quite a few thousand words in two ways. How each person spells is their own personal choice. We are simply sharing our preferred choice as we believe this removes confusion from the language and may assist others.

  2. In Australia as best we can tell, the words "judgement" and "judgment" is used fairly equally. In the UK the spelling "judgement" appears to have greater use.

Our preferred spelling is "judgement" and this is by coincidence is the same as used by the spellcheck program.

For legal use in Australia "judgment" appears to have much greater usage. You may wish to add "judgment" to your custom word list if you work in the legal area.

  3. Based on posts on the Internet many people have problems with the Outlook Express spellcheck not being enabled when it should be enabled, because they have Microsoft Office, Word, or Works installed. We do not suggest using the programs available on this page to get around this problem.

  4. If you wish to add additional words you can add them to the the custom.dic file using the Add option in the spellchecker. The words in the custom.dic file however will not be offered as suggestions for an incorrectly spelt word.
